In each and every society there are three stages or levels of social
    thinking:
    1. Socially beneficial thinking
    2. Negative social thinking
    3. Scientific social thinking.
    1. Socially beneficial thinking:
Socially beneficial thinking is usually comprised of progressive or constructive social proposals which are clearly designed to bring about progressive changes in the society. It leads to general welfare of the society. The thinkers are inspired by the law of humanity.
    2. Negative Social thinking:
Negative Social thinking is characterised by selfishness, disregard of general welfare etc. It is parochial and retrograde in nature. In this
negative type of social thinking the welfare of the majority is not taken
into consideration. Only interests of the few either in power or authority
or those who can manipulate the situation in their favour take advantage
    of the situation.
    3. Scientific Social thinking:
Scientific Social thinking is now the order of the day. The present
society wants this type of thinking. This thinking is impartial and
unbiased. It is a type of thinking which promotes collective welfare.
Now this type of thinking can be scientifically considered or analyzed.

ASSIGNMENT ON HISTORY OF SOCIAL THOUGHT.

      Social thought
social thought is the product of the thinking together of associates. Most social thought is of the ordinary dinner table variety, that is casual and desultory.
Man faces a world of complex social problems. As a result he is perplexed beyond description. His thinking often ends in confusion. In thinking about social problems the so-called practical person has proceeded in his own way. In the strict sense,Most social thought in the sense of group thought about social questions has contributed little to knowledge. Discussion-group thinking illustrates social thinking on its higher levels, but discussion-group thinking is not yet extensive. However, a great deal may be expected from it in the future. In fact in countries that preserve freedom of speech, it promises to become ultimately the main type of thought.
The thinking of persons about social life falls into three categories:
      1. That involving the advancement of human groups as groups.
      2. That referring to the manipulation of human beings to the gain of a special clique or group.
      3. That which aims to analyze the underlying social processes and laws irrespective of the effects of such analyses or the uses to which they are put.
The history of Social thought rises out of the beginnings of human struggle on earth and with jagged edges extends along the full sweep of the changing historical horizon. It finds expression through some of the world’s best minds. Our quest will bring us in contact with the most vital moments of the world’s most valuable thinkers.
Social thought usually finds its initial expression during social crises. When “prosperity” reigns and people are – in general, satisfied, new social thought is at ebb tide. But when social conditions are marked by gross injustices or when social changes come rapidly due to inventions, wars or other basic disturbances, then thinking about social life and problems is highly stimulated and new ideas or systems of ideas, that is ideologies are originated.

regarding societal issues or matters. It
is concerned with the ways in which
    people live together and face
    collectively their problems and
    challenges. These thoughts may
    themselves have solutions to these
    problems.
    2. Social Thought is Not the Sum Total of
the Thoughts of all the Members of
    Society:
Social thought has evolved out of the
    capacity for critical and analytical
    thinking of a few scholars,
    rationalists, scientists and
    philosophers. People of average
    intelligence can hardly enrich the
    existing social thought.
Only a handful of people can delve
deep into the social matters, events,
and problems and form opinions and
    theories about them. Bogardus thus
    comments: “However, the developing
and perfecting of new ideologies are
    usually the work of scholars,
    somewhat removed from the turmoil
of the hour. Social thought thus is the
product of social crisis and of
    scholarly analysis and synthesis.
    3. Social Thought need not necessarily be
    Scientific Always:
    Social thought touches upon various
aspects of our social life, experiences,
    conclusions, opinions, assessments,
valuations, etc. All these cannot be put
to scientific tests to assess their
validity and dependability. In spite of
this deficiency they have their own
    practical importance.
    4. Social Thought is not the same
    everywhere:
    Social thought has been immensely
influenced by factors such as time,
    place, environment and conditions.
Social thought normally arises in part
from the nature of the prevailing
    social conditions.
To understand it properly the student
must know the times which furnish
the setting for it. “A thorough going
knowledge of the culture and of the
    social, economic, political and
religious standards of a people is a
    minimum essential for a social
    thought.”
    5. Every Human Community has given its
Own Contribution to the Development of
    Social Thought:
Social thought is not the monopoly of
    any particular community. At the
same time all the nations or
    communities have not contributed
    equally to its enrichment. For
    example, the ancient Indian, Chinese,
    Egyptian, Babylonian, and Hebrew
civilisations of the East and the
    ancient Greek and the Roman
civilisations of the West, have given
    commendable contributions to the
realm of social thought. The rural and
the tribal people also have played
their role in the enrichment of social
    thought.
    6. Social Thought is Continuous in its
    Development:
Social thought has been found to be
    consistent in its development. As
Bogardus has pointed out, “the history
of social thought rises out of the
beginnings of human struggle on earth
and with jogged edges extends along
the full sweep of the changing
    historical horizons.”
    7. Social Crises or Hardships have always
    provided Motivation for the General
    Social Thought:
Social thought usually finds its initial
    expression during social crisis

Inasmuch as the average citizen, for the first time in the world's history, is beginning to attack social problems, he.is entitled to all the aid that can be made available. Upon the success of the average person in mastering the intricaciet of social thinking, the cause of democracy depends.
A large proportion of the analyses of social questions has been academic. These discussions have often terminated in quibbles or erudite generalizations. Insofar as social theories have been correct they have unfortunately been reserved for the theorists alone. The people themselves have not understood the nature of. social thought;they have not benefited ; and hence, they have held social thought in contempt. What is social thought?
Social thought, as distinguished from individual thought, treats of the welfare of one's associates and of groups. It may be very simple, merely observational, the result of daily experience, or it may be a scientific study of social processes. Sociology as an organized science has developed only during the past few decades. Inasmuch as sociology has simply begun its work of formulating the principles of societary progress, a large proportion of the thinking that has thus far been done in human his- tory about the welfare of social or associates is individual or social, rather than sociological.
A history of social thought, therefore, includes the larger social field as well as the more specific one of recent development, namely, the sociological. The time is hardly ripe for a history of distinctly social thought.
Social thought, as here used, is a synthesis of the observations of individuals about the welfare of other individuals, considered as individuals or as groups. The focus of social thought is not the welfare of the ego but of the alter, not of the self hul of others, not of the individual but of the class, group, organization, or process. Social thought draws from the thought-life of persons who have done unselfish thinking and who have focalized their attention upon the nature and principles of associative activities. It tests group progress by the degree in which human personalities secure constructive, co-operative expression. It measures the individual in his relationships to the social whole, whether that unit is the family, school, church, state, or the world society. It rates the individual in terms of a functioning unit in group life. philosophy were the same. Social thought and
sociological theory has close relationship. Social
thought is progressing through various stages of
    wisdom, tales, theology, philosophy, rationalism,
    pragmatism and scientific methods. Social
thought is the study of sociological knowledge
about social dynamics. The proverb, “Rome was
not built is a day”, is same to social thought,
    and social theory.
    Importance of social thought
Following are some important points of social
    thought.
    1. Social thought is very important in
    digging out of social problems.
    2. It is important to draw a scientific
    theory about a social problem.
    3. Social thought represents a particular
place in a society or culture and it is
    related to the social environment.
    4. Social thought is related to the law
    of cause and effect relationship.
    5. Social thought is trying to correct the
errors and mistakes is a society or
    culture.
    Characteristics of Social Thought
    1. Social Thought is societal thought.
    2. Social Thought need not necessarily be scientific
    always.
    3. Social Thought is not the same everywhere.
    4. Each Society and Each community has contributed
    to the development in society.
    5. Social Thought is a continuous process.
    6. Crises are hardly always provided motivation for
    social thought.
    7. Social Thought is an abstract concept.
    8. Though social thought is continuous it is very
    gradual in process.

1)social thought need not be scientific always :
it doesn't have to be scientific all the time..because it varies in every society..
    2)social thought is a gradual process :
before a thought becomes a social thought it is gradual..it takes time for just a thought to become a social thought.
    3)social thought is a continuous process :
as much as it is gradual is how it is continuous.. Just like change social thought keeps going and develops on previous ideas with time..
4)social thought is not the same everywhere..
the sociatal thoughts that are applicable here in Nigeria might not be applicable in European countries
    5)social thought is an abstract concept ;
one of the things you Dr Ajiboye told us at the beginning of our class is how abstract a concept social thought is..it is a thought and thoughts are of the mind and innate hence are only abstract.

Thought is literally the ideas, views and opinions held by someone about a phenomenon. Man's ability to interact and reason separates him from other animals. He is the final product of organic evolution and as such has greater capacities to adjust himself to the environment to suit his conveniences. Man with the help of his more evolved brain and greater intelligence has been thinking about a number of things. Various natural phenomena like birth and death, health and ill-health, rotations of seasons constituted the content of his thinking process.
Social thought is a by-product of social interaction. He is a social animal and always prefer to live in company of other men. Each aspect of man’s social life must have been the result of at least some people’s experiences, mutual adjustments, and experiments. People must have been directly or
      indirectly, and explicitly or implicitly
thinking about the ways in which they
      could share their feelings and
      emotions, problems and challenges,
miseries and maladies, etc., from the
very beginning. They must have also tried on their own the ways of facing the problems and challenges of life, to secure some amount of stability for their social life and contentment for their individual
mind. The thought that they have
entertained in this regard, no matter
how irrational and unscientific it is,
could be referred to as “social
      thought.”
conclusively, according to Rollin Chambliss: “Social thought is concerned with human beings in their relations with
their fellows.” In other words, Social thought came into being as man interact with his fellows. Consequently, it is the views, opinions and ideas held by someone about social problems and challenges and possible solutions.

Assignment Title: Critically examine the term social thought. Highlight and succinctly explain seven characteristics of Social Thought.
    Introduction
Social Thought is a specialized aspect of general history that deals with thinking and various ideals generated by various progenitors of sociology.
The term Social Thought is a combination of two words namely ‘social’ and ‘thought’. The former means the interaction between groups of people, thought or even ideas while the latter implies idea emanating from a conscious effort by a person or persons. Thoughts can also be describe as inner war within a person.
Man is not just a social being but also a reasoning animal. His reasoning capacity has enabled him to interact with his environment and his kind and as a result has continually altered and modify his society to meet his basic needs. This process of mans achievement is bases on the foundation of social thinking, for the present is a mere constructions of the past.
It was William NorthWhitehead who said any science which hesitate to forget his founder his lost, but then Alvin Gouldner in his own wisdom went beyond Williams in its remarks on the importance of history maintained that to forget something one must have had an idea but any science that forget his founding founders has either forget where it is coming from or know where it is going to, is therefore lost.
    Definition of social thought
According to Bogardus ‘social thought is thinking about social problems by one or a few persons here and there in human history or at the present.
William P Scott defines that ‘social thought to any relatively systematic attempt to theorize about society and social life whether it is classical or modern, scientific or unscientific’.
    The characteristics of social thought can however be referred to as the nature of social thought. They are itemized and explained as follows;
    - Social thought is societal thought: a knowledge of societary fundamentals is essential to sound thinking about present day problems
    - Social thought do not necessarily have to be scientific: foundations of social thought do not need to possess scientific ideas with it, so long as it enables the society in achieving solutions to its immediate problems.
    - Social thought differs from individual thought since it treats the welfare of one’s associates and group: it may be crude, merely observational, the result of daily experience, or it may be a scientific study of social processes.
    - Social thought is both concrete and abstract thought: concrete thinking rarely goes deep, it ask few questions, raises few doubt, and perceive few connections. Abstract thinking seeks causal explanations, classifies concreteness etc.
    - Social thought takes group progress by the degree to which individual persons secure constructive, cooperative, and collective expressions.
    - Primitive social thought is responsible for producing fundamental social concepts, such as kinship, authority, dependence, and tribal loyalty.
    - It measures the individual in relation to the society in which he belongs, whether it be the family, school, church, state or all of the combinations. It rates the individual in terms of functioning unit in group life.
    - Social thought draws from the thought that have unselfish thinking and have focalized their thoughts towards associative activities.
    - The focus of social thought is not the welfare of one’s self but of others, not of the individual but of the class, group, and organization.
    - Social thought is the synthesis of the observations of individuals, about their welfare of other individuals considered or as group.
    Conclusion
Although social thought maybe overly abstract but it is the foundation of scientific thinking and no society has gotten to his present form without a conscious effort of group of people or organizations to think out ways of advancement and solutions to societal problems.

Meaning and Nature of Social Thought – Man is not only a “Social Being”, but also a Reasoning Animal: Man is not like other animals. He is an animal of extra-ordinary abilities and capacities. He is the final product of organic evolution and as such has greater capacities to adjust himself to the environment. He not only adjusts himself to the environment, if need arises, he even modifies the environment to suit to his conveniences.

Other animals cannot do this; they can only adjust to the existing environment and their failure to do so would ultimately result either in their death, or in their running away from the situation.

Man’s life is many-sided. Hence, he claims himself to be a “social animal”, a “political animal”, a “cultural being” and so on. He is also called a “thinking animal” or a “reasoning animal.”

Definition of the term “Social Thought”:

In simple words, it can be said that “social thought” essentially refers to the thought concerning the social life and activities of man. Sociologists have given their own definitions of social thought among which the following may be cited.

    i. Bogardus:

“Social thought is thinking about social problems by one or a few persons here and there in human history or at the present.”
    Characteristics of Social Thought

    1. Social Thought is Societal Thought:

Social thought is basically the thought regarding societal issues or matters. It is concerned with the ways in which people live together and face collectively their problems and challenges. These thoughts may themselves have solutions to these problems.

    2. Social Thought is Not the Sum Total of the Thoughts of all the Members of Society:

Social thought has evolved out of the capacity for critical and analytical thinking of a few scholars, rationalists, scientists and philosophers. People of average intelligence can hardly enrich the existing social thought.

Only a handful of people can delve deep into the social matters, events, and problems and form opinions and theories about them. Bogardus thus comments: “However, the developing and perfecting of new ideologies are usually the work of scholars, somewhat removed from the turmoil of the hour. Social thought thus is the product of social crisis and of scholarly analysis and synthesis.

    3. Social Thought need not necessarily be Scientific Always:

Social thought touches upon various aspects of our social life, experiences, conclusions, opinions, assessments, valuations, etc. All these cannot be put to scientific tests to assess their validity and dependability. In spite of this deficiency they have their own practical importance.

    4. Social Thought is not the same everywhere:

Social thought has been immensely influenced by factors such as time, place, environment and conditions. Social thought normally arises in part from the nature of the prevailing social conditions.

To understand it properly the student must know the times which furnish the setting for it. “A thorough going knowledge of the culture and of the social, economic, political and religious standards of a people is a minimum essential for a social thought.”

    5. Every Human Community has given its Own Contribution to the Development of Social Thought:

Social thought is not the monopoly of any particular community. At the same time all the nations or communities have not contributed equally to its enrichment. For example, the ancient Indian, Chinese, Egyptian, Babylonian, and Hebrew civilisations of the East and the ancient Greek and the Roman civilisations of the West, have given commendable contributions to the realm of social thought. The rural and the tribal people also have played their role in the enrichment of social thought.

    6. Social Thought is Continuous in its Development:

Social thought has been found to be consistent in its development. As Bogardus has pointed out, “the history of social thought rises out of the beginnings of human struggle on earth and with jogged edges extends along the full sweep of the changing historical horizons.”

    7. Social Crises or Hardships have always provided Motivation for the General Social Thought:

Social thought usually finds its initial expression during social crises. When “prosperity” reigns and people are, in general, satisfied, new social thought is at ebb tide. But when social conditions are marked by gross injustices

    William P. Scott:

“Social thought refers to any relatively systematic attempt to theorise about society and social life, whether it be classical or modern, scientific or unscientific.”

    (i) Social thought though continuous is very slow and gradual in its development. We do not find fast developments taking place in this field as in the realm of physical sciences.

(ii) Major portion of the social thought is not found to be preserved in the form of books but in the unwritten forms such as folklores, folksongs, legends, myths, folktales and so on.

(iii) “Social thought is abstract” – says Bogardus. All thinking is abstract and social thought is no exception to this general rule.

(iv) Social thought has not always been utilitarian and beneficial to mankind. It has been, at times, abused by some people to subserve their own ends. Ex: (i) The theory of inborn superiority of the Aryan Race advocated by Nazis of Germany, (ii) The ideologies such as Gandhianism, socialism, secularism, etc. are being abused by different people in India today for different purposes.

V . Social Thought is not the same everywhere:

Social thought has been immensely influenced by factors such as time, place, environment and conditions. Social thought normally arises in part from the nature of the prevailing social conditions.

Social thought is that branch of thought which is primarily concerned with man’s general social life and its problems as created, expressed and endured by human interrelations and interactions. E.S. Bogardus has defined social thought by saying that, “Social thought is thinking about social problems by one or few persons here and there in human history or at present.”

Social thought does not originate all on a sudden rather it develops gradually, and slowly only with the passage of time. Rollin Chambliss has defined social thought by saying that “Social thought is concerned with human beings in their relations with their fellows.”

    Characteristics of Social thought:

Social thoughts are mainly derived from the social problems.

According to Bogardus, social thoughts have the following characteristics:

    1. Social thoughts are originated from social problems.

    2. Social thoughts are also related to the human social life.

    3. It is the result of social interactions and interrelations.
